Robins Class

Robins class is the name of the Reception class at Wirksworth Church of England Infant School.

Mrs Emery is the class teacher and Mrs Chapman and Mrs Flitter are the Teaching Assistants in our class on different days.

We have a large, bright classroom and a door out on to our outdoor play area. We're next door to the school office, so Mrs Haynes and Mrs Kinder get lots of visitors!

We like to go on walks around Wirksworth  - finding out how the local environment changes through the seasons as well as other curriculum-based fact finding activities like finding numbers in the environment.

Minibeasts.  Today we started a new topic - 'Minibeasts'.  After reading about  minibeasts we went on a bug hunt around the school grounds looking for them.  We found lots of spiders, woodlice, worms and snails.

World Book Day - 2.3.2023

Today we had a lovely day celebrating World Book Day.  Everyone came to school dressed as their favourite characters and bringing books to read together. We spent some time at the library listening to the story of 'Shark in the Park' and taking a book away to read at home.  Later on our parents joined us in class for a delicious snack and another story.   We had a lovely day!

D&T - In D&T we made junk models with wheels.  We discussed different ways of adding the wheels and the children were very motivated to put their new learning into practice.

Art - This year Yayoi Kusama and discovered she was known as the 'princess of polka dots'.  We looked at her works in particular the Obliteration room and were inspired to make a polka dot painting and decorate a chair to be used in our display.

Bikeability - Today was our third session on the bikes and our confidence is growing with every one.  We have enjoyed these sessions immensely.

We realise this page hasn't been updated recently. We are currently working on production of an online 'Our School' booklet.

Science morning - Bridge Building.  "Oh no! The bridge to the Three Billy Goats Gruff's field was damaged in a storm and they need to find a new one".

Everyone rushed to help and using either Sticklebricks, Duplo or Mobilo created a new bridge.  There was lots of strengthening of the bridges during construction and lengthening of those that fell a little short.  Here is a selection of those the Billy Goats liked.

Adapting - Today I set the class a test.  "A ball of dough will sink in the water.  How can I adapt it to make it float?"  The children spent the afternoon investigating how to make their balls light enough to float.

Science - In Science we are looking at Light Sources and yesterday we took advantage of the sunny weather to go on a light/ shadow hunt.  It was interesting to see the effect the cloud had when it covered the sky on our shadows.  Everyone wondered where their shadow went and it generated lots of discussion!

Pirates - This week we have started looking at our topic on Pirates.  We have talked about who Pirates were and what they might look like.  We made pictures of what we thought we would look like and explored the new pirate area.

Easter Morning. This morning we have had a lovely time going on an Easter hunt, drawing daffodils and tasting then making craft Hot Cross Buns for our Easter Service next week.

Stone Centre Visit We had a lovely morning at the Stone Centre on Thursday where the children planted their dog violet plants to help endangered butterflies, such as the dark green fritillary. Please feel free to take a walk up so your children can show you where the plants are.

Number - We now know our number bonds to 5 so have started looking at which pairs of numbers make 10.

Minibeasts - As part of our minibeast topic we have been growing caterpillars.  Today we came to class and found two had emerged from their cocoons and another was hatching. It was a very exciting day!

Sports Morning - We had a lovely sports morning moving around the school taking place in many skill-based activities.  In the EYFS area we played balloon volleyball and had tremendous fun! Often competing with our parents.

Whole School Trip to Millers Dale. Today we went on a 'Tracks and Trails' walk to Millers Dale to see the lovely Nature Reserve and Lime Kiln.  We had a lovely time and found out how they excavated limestone and used the kilns to make lime. We also enjoyed the walk, picnic, the sound of the birds, river and managing the tricky paths home together.
